My students need books, books, and more books. They are desperate for books that they are interested in.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Barnett's classroom raised $509

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kylene Beers states, "There is no single template for the illiterate student, but there is a single remedy: a good book" My goal is to get a good book into the hands of each one of my students.
Our school is nestled in the poorest congressional district in the country.
My students live in an environment where the high school drop-out rate is well above 50%, yet they push themselves to come to school and be better.
My students come with a very diverse set of academic, socioeconomic, and emotional needs. Meeting every one of those needs can be very overwhelming. Many proclaim to not like reading, but I believe that they have just not found their just right book.
My Project
My students will use the new books for their independent reading at school and outside of school. My goal is for them to increase their level of reading and understanding. When I took a survey of the other teachers in my school and I asked them what hurts our students the most on their state exams, the student's reading ability was the answer I received the most.
Access to high-interest books will help my students desire to read more and therefore increase their reading ability.
Reading, especially deep reading, is vigorous exercise for the brain. Not only does it help the students critical thinking skills, but also increases the readers' capacity for empathy. Their minds are opened up and they are more likely to tap into their compassion when they interact with other people.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
