My Students

My students, 9th-12th grade, come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Approximately 65% of our student population is on free & reduced lunch. Our population also has an above state average number of students with an IEP. Serving rural Oklahoma also means we have a high number of Native American student artists.

In spite of economic hardships, family splits and a huge alcohol/drug problem in our community, students still get on the bus and get involved, are creative, and quietly working out their problems by expressing themselves through art making.

Our high school also sponsors and Art Club for students who aren't enrolled in a class but still want to exercise their creativity.

My Project

Recently, a disabled boy in Claremore, Oklahoma has made national news because of the creative endeavors of himself and his mother. They wanted to raise awareness of childhood blindness. They take small to medium rocks, paint them with happy scenes or inspirational messages. Finally, they put them in obvious and not-so-obvious places for people to find. Her Facebook group has become so popular that people are painting and finding rocks outside of Oklahoma, as far as Kansas and Arkansas.

I would like to involve students and raise awareness on how Art can educate viewers about physical disabilities and inspire viewers to accept the natural gifts and talents of children with disabilities.

First, students would learn about the young man and his mom from Claremore. Then they would research images and quotes that encourage awareness of student disabilities (from emotional to learning to physical).

Students would then prep their rock, and draw the encouraging image/quote on the rock. Next, they would paint the rock with neatly with a heavy bodied acrylic and coat it with a protective shellac.

They would be free to "hide" their artworks in the community for others to find.

Lastly, our artists would write a response page about the art process and what emotions they experienced as they were hiding the rocks for another "friend" to find.
