My Students

I know that creativity can be messy, but this is ridiculous! Help us organize our scenic and prop designs.

We are a middle school drama / speech department serving grades 6 - 8.

Our Title I school district is in a high-risk community where most students are minority and low-income. Though our students struggle at times to succeed; they are passionate, imaginative kids who deserve the chance to experience a creative learning environment. In 8th grade, theater students learn public speaking, problem-solving, artistic, and teamwork skills by mounting 10-minute plays at the end of a 9 week class. The students create designs (sound, lights, set, etc.) for their plays.

My Project

The students spend several weeks working their designs for class. The students create scenic and prop designs using found objects, large sheets of paper and other supplies. When work time is over, the students have no place safe to store their work. We don't even have enough boxes to put all their props in. Our classroom does not have art storage so students roll up their backdrops and put them in a pile. Often, students waste time digging through the pile trying to find their artwork. In some cases their work is ruined by the constant shuffling of papers. Not only do kids have to start over, paper is wasted.

We need a way to keep the theatre students' creations safe an organized.

If we had enough cardboard tubes for all of the group set designs, and storage boxes for their props, we could save our paper, energy, and heartache. Your donation can get us organized so that we can make our designs become a reality.
