My Students

Having devoured "The Outsiders" as 6th graders, my students are dying to get their hands on the sister novel by S.E. Hinton, "That Was Then, This Is Now." Having read over 10 novels in my classroom alone, "The Outsiders" remains a fan favorite... but they haven't had round 2 yet!

My school is located in the Southeast corner of Baltimore City.

We are a Title One, which means we serve the neediest students in the area. Over 93% of our students are on the state-funded breakfast and lunch program. As a public school, we are incredibly diverse, with 85% of our population being African American, 10% being Hispanic, and the remainder White. My 8th grade classroom, whom this project will benefit, has 27 students. Four are native Spanish speakers, three receive Special Education services, ALL love S.E. Hinton's work. I taught them their first year of middle school, when their reading levels spanned from 2nd grade to 7th grade. Now, as 8th graders, they all assessed from 6th grade to 11th grade, including the Special Education kids. They have made great strides, due in part to the generous book donations our class has received in the past.

My Project

As I mentioned, my kids read "The Outsiders" in 6th grade and completed independent projects, including creating a Dairy Queen meal to honor Ponyboy and Johnny's church fire rescue. With this novel, I would like to have a culminating final project that allows them to create group presentations based on the work they do in literature circles. I started literature circles with our current novel. Each group is assigned a topic which asks them to explore various ideas from family relationships to codes and language usage. The groups all read the same chapter, while searching for information on their own topic. In the remainder of class, they are able to present the ideas they found and demonstrate the novel from their own topic's perspective.

The most valuable gift we can give our children is the desire to learn and see from another perspective.

This novel is the vessel I need to help teach these ideas. My 8th graders are getting ready for a huge transition to high school and this novel will help keep them grounded and engaged in their middle school experience. Please help us remain focused, engaged and creative by supporting our book project!
