Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not discovered books that are relevant and meaningful, but they have not met the kids from the Bronx that tell about life through poetry and prose either.

We are the class of 2021!

This is my fifth year as an 8th grade Language Arts Teacher at a Title I school in Texas. I am lucky enough to have some of the best students in the world. At least 90% of my students are Hispanic and are still transitioning between English and Spanish. Learning English is something that at times can be challenging for them, but they are always ready to learn. My classes are eager to learn anything I throw at them and they love reading anything that relates to them and their world. My students' past education has been heavily focused on the state assessment reading passages and rarely have been exposed to novels. This year, I want to expose them to Bronx Masquerade, a novel which will help them better understand poetry.

My Project

Having multiple copies of Bronx Masquerade will expose students to poetry that they can relate to. Nikki Grimes writes in a way that appeals to young adults. For many of my students, the poetry in this novel, is something that they can relate to. Most have even experienced some of the same things in the novel. Reading this book will forever change my students because the poems will provoke meaningful discussions and passionate writing through student-led literature circles. Students will be able to read, reflect, and analyze these novels in small groups. They will also be able to write poetry of their own. In addition, the headphones will allow students with special services to be able to read and participate in class with necessary accommodations.

Today, reading and writing have taken a back seat in many of students lives.

It has become something that most of them are only exposed to only in school. Having students read poetry that they are able to relate to will keep my students invested in reading inside and outside of class. These novels will provide my classes with endless opportunities to grow academically and as individuals.
