This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
***Who We Are...***
I teach middle school drama / speech grades 6 - 8. Our title I school district is in a high-risk community where most of students are minority and low-income. Though our students struggle at times to succeed, they are passionate, imaginative kids who deserve the chance to experience a creative learning environment.
***The Project...***
I teach 8th grade theater students public speaking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills by mounting 10-minute plays at the end of a 9 week class. This wonderful project allows students of all ability levels and learning types to play a role in the creative process. Special needs students of all types (gifted, slower learners, etc.) contribute in a way that works best for them.
I am writing a series of grants to gather the necessary materials to make this class a springboard for student achievement and innovation. If you like this grant, please look at my others!
***How the Class Works...***
1. Students elect directors based on subject knowledge, fairness, kindness, intelligence, and leadership skills.
2. The class chooses plays from a series scripts offered (we need more scripts!).
3. Students audition and are cast based off of both student interest in specific roles and ability level (every student has a role).
4. The directors lead rehearsals - planning out blocking (movement) and helping their peers interpret the text.
5. Each student contributes element of design to the play: set, lights, sound, makeup, costumes, and prop (based on student interest and ability level).
6. The designs are placed on display by the director.
7. Students bring or create costumes, props, set pieces, sound effects, etc. that fit the designs they have created.
8. Other classes are invited to see the productions.
9. Students perform for between 40 – 60 audience members.
10. Students and audience take part in a question/answer session where they evaluate their own work and the process itself.
***The Problem...***
We need to create a library of age appropriate 10-minute plays for our students to use in this project. We have a few plays we currently use. However, each year we will perform more than 30 plays (6 – 9 each quarter). More than 300 students will take part in these plays each year. I am afraid our audience will soon be bored with the same 6 or so plays over and over again.
***How You Can Help...***
Your donation will make it possible for theater students to have a diverse collection of scripts from which to choose. By providing these scripts, you allow the students to choose the type of play that best suits them.
