My Students
80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year. This statistic is shocking. The children I teach come from families that do not have books at home and are not reading or being read to.
I teach a class of 17 kindergrtners in a low income school.
Many come from low income families but they are eager to learn and excited to be in school. These children love books! They are not all able to read the words on the pages, yet, but they are eager to hear stories or look at pictures to create their own stories.
My Project
Our class has a small class library that the children are allowed to use everyday. Our class is in need of more books that the children will be interested in reading. The books selected to enhance our library are books that the children will be able to relate to or learn about a topic of interest in our class. Our class is also asking for books with diverse characters and a retelling kit to help the students have fun comprehending the stories and have even more fun retelling the stories. Isn't that what learning is about, having fun?!
With your help my 17 eager kindergrtners will enjoy the stories and retelling them with the interactive kit.
When children have fun learning they will want to continue to learn. This will create lifelong learners. Hopefully, 80% of US families that did not buy or read a book last year, will become a statistic of the past when we create a new generation of children who love reading!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
