Imagine being told by your teacher that you are not allowed to do your homework? Sounds confusing, right?! It seems that nearly every day I have to tell my young trombonists that they cannot practice. This is because most of our trombones are shared among three students!
Many of my fellow teachers claim that they teach the best kids in the world.
I know that this can't possibly be true...because my students are astoundingly amazing, and for that reason are the BEST! My students attend a large middle school in an urban setting. They hail from all over the globe, speak a multitude of languages and have unique ideas and perspectives. Drawn together by their love for music, our band program is an extended family. The children I teach not only take pride in performance, but also in every aspect of our band program. Even though many of them have to share instruments, this never quashes their enthusiasm, nor do they complain.
My Project
The bell rings at 3 p.m. and suddenly the instrument closet is flooded with students eager to sign out their instruments to practice. Many of the students walk out with a disappointed look, with which I have become too familiar. Because up to three students share most of our lower brass and lower woodwind instruments, all too often the shelves are empty leaving many students without an instrument to take home. The vast majority of my students cannot afford to purchase nor even rent a student-level instrument. Receiving the two trombones from this grant would allow more students to practice at home on a regular basis.
As the age old saying goes, "practice makes perfect!" True, that is of course if you have access to an instrument on which to practice.
