Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With the implementation of The Common Core State Standards, there has been a strong shift towards the reading, writing, and understanding of nonfiction texts. The science books included in this project will help me to provide additional nonfiction resources for students to read.
I work with a total of 64 students at a school located in Southeast Los Angeles County.
100% of my students qualify for free lunch and 50% are English Language Learners.
Over time, their love for reading and writing has increased. While I do have a class library, many students are reaching a point where they have already read all of the nonfiction texts available, and they are hungry for more books.
My Project
These 16 books directly support the California Science Standards that I am required to teach in my 6th grade classroom. These books will be read by students individually, as well as used in whole class readings and discussions. They will provide an opportunity to reinforce learning during our science block.
Donations to this project will improve our classroom library.
Though science ideas and topics may be covered during science instruction by reading the textbook and/or experiments, they often need to be reinforced before students can absorb the information.
These books cover main science standards, such as the effects of forces such as tectonic plates and weather. During Readers' Workshop, students may use these books to either introduce a science topic or reinforce a topic already taught.
