Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our science class revolves around the inquiry based lesson cycle. The vast majority of the day is spent with students exploring the science; making sense of it for themselves and in groups. Collaboration, 21st century skills, and STEM integration are essential to the success of my students.
My students are sixth graders in the heart of Los Angeles in a Title I school with 97% of the school on Free or Reduced Price Lunch.
They have for the most part been at this same school site since kindergarten, but have seen a lot of changes. Administrators have come and gone, but the new admin team is working hard to create a pipeline for STEM majors. As a staff we have been focused on creating a consistent and pedagogically meaningful curriculum to help students excel. Personally, I think that science is a great way to access a social justice curriculum and my students have been very engaged in addressing issues of equity as they apply to sciences.
My Project
My students possess endless curiosity about the sky and space and as the culminating activity for our unit on Earth's weather, climate, and ecosystems I would like all of my classes to work collaboratively to design and launch a weather balloon into the atmosphere. The balloon will be loaded with sensors and probes built by the students and will collect data for all the classes to work with. Students will be active meteorologist and will then draw conclusions about the weather based on information that they actively gathered.
I think of high altitudes and the edge of space as being inaccessible to most people.
I really want to give my student the opportunity to literally touch the sky through the series of lessons that will stem from this project. There is a cliche that the sky is the limit, and very literally, I want to give my students the opportunity to exceed that.
