Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Danny Kaye once said: “Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint you can on it.” My students are definitely up for such a challenge! It's amazing how my students perk up at a certain time of the school day: "What are we going to do in art?" Their faces are full of interest and curiosity - they cannot wait to get started on the next project! I teach 6th grade math, science and art at an urban middle school in California that serves primarily low-income students of color. My students are incredible and I feel extremely privileged to work with them and their families.

This is the first year that art has been included in the 6th grade curriculum and it has been delightful to see how excited my students are to have such an elective. Unfortunately, we do not have many available art supplies.

I recently discovered how interested my students are in painting when I purchased some finger paints for a color mixing lesson. My students were thrilled to dive into the hands-on activity and they emerged at the end of the period with very colorful fingers as well as creative pieces. However, we would like to explore painting as a class on a much larger scale and utilizing more advanced techniques (fingers are still allowed - though brushes would definitely help!). I would like to have a watercolor unit in which students paint their own landscapes as we study master painters like Claude Monet. Also, I would like to have a unit based around portraiture in which students paint their own portrait in a style of their choice after exploring styles of a variety of artists (from Picasso to DaVinci to Warhol).

Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and I hope that you will consider helping us make this project happen. Your support will help my students develop their artistic talents and engage with art in a meaningful way. My students are so excited to experience painting and take their skills to the next level. I hope that my students will have an opportunity to experience the words of Vincent Van Gogh: “I dream of painting and then I paint my dream.”
