This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Often, middle school students are not interested in science because of the lack of school resources. Students need to be able to manipulate materials and equipment to experience the science concepts in an interactive way.

99% Hispanic is the demographics of my school.

90% qualify for free or reduced lunch. I noticed that my students do not have much exposure to city-wide events, or public places such as world music concerts, museums, the beach, etc. Because of this, most of my pupils cannot make the connection between school lessons and their daily life. I need to be able to illustrate the concepts of science in a meaningful and shocking way. what better way than playing with science toys and contraptions?

My Project

Every unit of our current curriculum offers opportunities to learn and reflect on natural phenomena that affects our daily lives. Students will understand better the concept of liquid density with the use of the "Drinking Bird" and by using the ferrofluid material. I already have super magnets, all I need is this interesting fluid to complement a great lab experience. I always wanted to teach a lesson on chromatography, but this requires many Sharpi Markers of different colors.

Students will walk away with total understanding of the difficult topic of density.

I'm not asking for much, I spend so much money out of my own pocket, that I feel the need to ask for help.
