In a neighborhood where many expect to find a failing school, we are building an academic powerhouse. Our 5th graders have been working hard on their learning, but many come from homes without resources/books. Touch these bright spirits with reading they will remember for the rest of their lives.
Our students are a rich and diverse tapestry of Black, White, Asian, Hispanic and Native American heritage, from ages K-5.
Their families are long-time residents and locals as well as immigrants from around the globe. The vast majority of our families qualify for free and reduced lunch.
My Project
We want to create wonder for these students by giving them books of their own to read. They will learn stories, they will learn characters, they will learn new vocabulary, but more importantly our goal is for them to learn to connect their life and their dreams to create their own stories and futures, as well as learn to love to read.
I wish you could see the smiles on the faces of these children as they receive gifts of reading.
You would see joy and excitement and windows opening to their dreams of the future. Nearly all come from families who have not attended higher education, and I hope that each book they read is a stepping stone on their way to college.
