My Students
The old school of thought says that you cannot shake money off of trees. And that you must work hard for the things you have. My students are from the new school of thought that says If I want something then it should just appear magically. My students need a reality check about life.
The majority of my students are African American students from single parent households that struggle sometimes with basic needs but show resiliency in being faithful to attending school everyday.
Our school is a public Montessori school where students learn in multilevel classrooms and use lots of hands-on materials. My students enjoy learning and show great creativity in class.
My Project
The classic games that I am requesting will give our 5th grade students the opportunity to learn a little about the responsibility of saving, budgeting and paying bills. The Payday game is a wonderful tool that allows students to explore what it may be like to take care of themselves when they grow up. They have to pay expected and unexpected expenses. This game can be very pivotal to their understanding that money is not just free but it comes with great responsibility. The Allowance game will give my students the opportunity to practice handling money and making change.
This project is needed to help prepare my 5th graders for middle school and life.
It is necessary for my students to begin understanding now the importance of good money management so that in the future they will be responsible citizens who can take care of themselves.
