5th Grade Readers and Writers Need Books and Supplies!
My students need chapter books for book clubs, class sets of novels, nonfiction books for research, and writer's workshop materials to publish our writing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into the classroom everyday ready to learn and grow. They love to read and learn new things through books and technology.
I teach at at Title 1 school in Richmond, CA, where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Even though my students face many hardships outside of school, they want to become scholars so they can have a successful life one day. They are creative, fun and energetic, and they deserve the best resources.
My Project
The books and materials that I am requesting for my students are going to support them during Reader's and Writer's Workshop. My students need books for independent reading, book clubs, research, and class novel studies. We are currently completing our first novel study and my students are having a wonderful time going deeper into the book and discussing the characters. I want to continue this excitement towards reading and get a few more class sets of novels so we can enjoy more wonderful stories together.
After reading all of these wonderful books, my students need paper and pencils to write their essays and ink for our classroom printer to publish their work.
We have started our Writer's Workshop units but are quickly running out of paper and pencils. I also want my students to be able to type their final drafts of their writing using our classroom iPads, but we have run out of ink in our classroom printer.
Even though I do have many avid readers and writers in my classroom, I do have a few students who are very timid. I think these high interest books will motivate and encourage my nervous readers, especially the books we can read in book club and as a class. In addition, my timid writers can use our iPads to type and print out their writing more frequently which will motivate them to write more during Workshop.
