My project needs 6 horseshoe magnets, 6 directional compasses, 1 digiscope DS300, 60 owl pellets, a set of tweezers, a set of classroom beakers, and droppers.
I am a fifth grade science teacher. We are a Title 1 school with a 73% free lunch rate.
This summer I participated in a science institute at our local university. We learned how to teach our children to understand science content rather than just doing knowledge recall. I am a very kinesthetic leaner and love to teach with many hands on activities. I believe if the children can experience something hands-on they will remember it later. The problem is, I do not have any lab equipment or supplies to have any hands-on activities. I have around 125 students and cannot afford to purchase enough supplies for all of my students.
My request of magnets, beakers, tweezers, owl pellets, a mineral kit, droppers and compasses would give me a start in each of the areas of science. I feel that I would be able to do several different hands on activities with these items. Each of my different activities would provide my students with an understanding of different science concepts.
With your help, students will be able to experience hands on science in their classroom. Thank you advance for your generosity.
