My students need hands-on manipulatives to use during small group instruction to better understand math concepts.

My Students
The 5th graders at J.S.B. Elementary are full of energetic, creative, and funny personalities. Our students are a multi-cultural mix of high energy and talent, in a Title I school. We are over 95% poverty, yet students are hard working and want to learn and grow as individuals. They are so excited to create and explore academic avenues, tackling all tasks with a wide range of creative abilities and interests.
Our students work hard to be respectful, responsible and productive every day.
In my classroom, I strive daily to ensure that I practice a culture of acceptance and high expectations. I place a strong emphasis on fluency building, independent practice and learning with others in my classroom. Through Guided Math, in conjunction with Math Workshop, my goal is to help my students develop a love for math, every day. Can you help me?
My Project
It is impossible to rely on simply teaching students a formula to answer math problems anymore. My students often learn at varying paces; therefore, not all students will master a concept at the same time. Therefore, switching to a Guided Math, in conjunction with Math Workshop teaching style will better serve my students. With this new style of teaching, students will participate in a whole-class mini-lesson, before breaking into station rotations. They will be separated by level of understanding, according to their unit pre-test scores. This allows for students to be rotated or moved to different groups by lesson or unit.
Manipulatives are a powerful tool for supporting classroom assessment.
Manipulatives are concrete objects, that can be viewed and physically handled by students, in order to demonstrate or model abstract concepts. From flash cards to geoboards, all of the materials on my "wish-list" will allow my students to better understand and master all 5th grade standards.
During guided math, each student will receive small group, need-specific instruction with me, with manipulatives, followed by independent/partner work time. Students are engaged at all times in mathematics practice, and concepts are reinforced daily in stations. Students are motivated by the rotation, and manage themselves with little need for teacher interruption.
