My Students

Our school population is 50% low-income and a fourth of the students are English Learners (EL). I work with English Language Learners in grades K-5. My students come from the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, central and south America, and Asia to name a few.

Many of my students are struggling to catch up to their peers.

My Project

Our classroom needs sets of books at all reading levels for our book club. Once a week I meet with small groups of ELL (English Language Learners) for our book club. Some of the students struggle with reading. While others have the skills, they just need more practice. Each week I read with them and then send the book home to read several chapters before the next class.

We discuss the books just like a book club.

My goal is to get the students hooked on the books. We’ll read the book aloud taking turns. Talk about the book and the reading strategies we need to use and then send the book home for the week.

The books I chose are fiction and nonfiction with a diverse set of characters that the students can relate to. My students need books that are appropriate for their age and a level they can read and understand at.
