5th Grade Classroom Environment- Make Learning Comfortable and Engaging
Help me give my students flexible seating to meet the needs of all learners. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused productive and engaged.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of our students live below the poverty level and reside in public housing. Currently, I will be working with fifth-grade students in an ICT setting. These students are performing at various levels from on to below the grade level standard. The population of the children in my class is either English language learners, students will disabilities, and general education students. My students attend a title 1 elementary school in the South Bronx. This year we teach approx. 60 5th grade students, special education and general education students, ELL students ELA and Social Studies.
My students are children that require the school to be a place where they not only embark on a learning adventure every day but an environment that reminds them daily; that they are important, that they matter and that we have high expectation for them.
My students are curious and are eager to explore books and tap into their own lives as authors. Allowing for an classroom environment in which they are allowed to move around freely and feel comfortable to explore is extremely important in engaging them in learning.
My Project
The materials for this project will be used through out the school year. Flexible seating will allow our fifth grades to move and sit comfortably all over the classroom. When students feel comfortable they are engaged, making them for productive. In our ICT classroom setting (gen ed/special co taught class) flexible seating will allow all our students to put their best effort forward working in a comfortable environment. The materials will allow for students to allow students to sit where they choose to stay calm and focused. Students will be able to use the flexible seating to sit comfortable and engage in reading and writing activities through out the school day.
