Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fifth-graders in an urban school. They represent diverse nationalities, home languages, family structures, interests, and learning styles. The Coronavirus pandemic has drastically impacted my students in a few ways. First of all, they live in the neighborhood with the highest concentration of Coronavirus cases in the entire state. This is problematic because it directly affects their families and their neighbors. Secondly, many of my students do not have the resources to successfully navigate online instruction during this time, so they are falling farther and farther behind their more advantaged peers.

My students are determined to overcome any obstacles they face in life.

The school neighborhood is in an area of high poverty, and more than 80% of the students in the community entered school with a primary language background other than English. However, my students will not let their circumstances label them as disadvantaged learners. They continue to make the best of the opportunities they are presented. As a result, they will finish their elementary school career with determination and resilience!

My Project

My students' lives have been turned upside-down for the last third of the school year. They have been resiliant and have continued to work hard in spite of facing unprecedented challenges. They are some of the unsung heroes of this coronavirus pandemic.

These supplies will help my students finalize an art project in which they create their own unique t-shirts to celebrate their promotion to 6th grade during the coronavirus pandemic.

They are creating designs, which I will help them edit using design software. Once their designs are finalized, I will cut them on vinyl using our class Cricut Explore and then iron the designs onto t-shirts. My students will never forget their 5th grade year - the year of Covid19 - and a creating t-shirt souvenir will be a positive memory from this experience.
