This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a fifth grade teacher. We are asking for a donation of camping gear to facilitate an annual camping trip for our students. Many of the children we serve live in poverty, their experiences are very limited by the finances of their households. Some have never been as far as Twin Falls. As a school we do our best to provide enrichment activities for our students to help them to have experiences beyond our small town. Last year we had the opportunity to take our fifth grade class camping in the Borah Basin. It was a once in a lifetime trip for many of our students, the first time they had had the ability to truly interact with the outdoors.

The students thrived in this experience and commented about how amazing it was to be out and sleep in a tent.

We as a school would like to be able to host a fifth grade camping and nature education trip annually, to do this we need some help. We would like to have sleeping bags and sleeping pads for those students who do not have these items at their disposal. By having sleeping bags, and pads at the school children that do not have their own gear will not have to worry that they can not attend with their peers. More children can attend if there will not be a major financial impact on their family. As you can imagine this is a significant cost to our school to make this trip attainable for these families. If you could donate sleeping gear this would allow our school to take our fifth grade students camping exposing hundreds of children to the wonder of the great outdoors and creating nature lovers that may have not get this chance.
