My students need basic learning materials, including math manipulatives and class sets of protractors, wipe of boards, and tape measurers, for a hands-on math experience!

My Students
All too often, mathematics is seen as a list of facts, of rights and wrongs; not as the exploratory experience that it can be. I want my students to engage in mathematical concepts through exploration and hands-on interactions with materials.
Beginning this fall, I will teach ten and eleven-year-old fifth grade students at a small, college preparatory, public middle school.
My students are deeply invested in our school's mission to send 100% of our students "to and through college", but it is no secret that we face many challenges each day. My students are growing up in a low-income, urban neighborhood in the largest city in the Midwest. Because of where they live, many of my students will enter the fifth grade below many of their peers academically, some at a first grade level.
The materials in this proposal will allow for hands-on, interactive, and differentiated learning. This method of teaching is proved to deepen students understanding of mathematical concepts, to help students master concepts at a faster pace, and to create joy around the learning process. These materials will help to guarantee that my students will leave my classroom with two or more years growth in just ten months.
My Project
After teaching kindergarten for two years, I have consulted the best middle school math teachers I know, and they have compiled a list of "must-haves" every fifth grade math classroom needs. This list includes counters, area tiles, dice, protractors, wipe off boards, measuring tapes, and fraction manipulatives.
My students' first year of middle school is such a crucial year to build the foundation necessary to become successful, lifelong learners.
These materials will allow them to realize their academic potential throughout this year and to ignite their love of reading.
