My Students

We are a rural EC - 8th grade school district located in Northern IL. Our district consists of one elementary school and one middle school. Our students vary in their learning abilities, needs, and backgrounds.

Our students enjoy the opportunity to work with other students, especially older students in our district.

They love to engage in conversations with other students and look up to the Middle School students who are in a different building. I'm the Media Specialist/Tech Coach in my building and help facilitate connections through Pen-pals, Zoom, cooperative tech tools and other avenues.

It is important to me that I do anything I can to help the students see and appreciate as many cultures and perspectives as possible. I try to provide books that spotlight different backgrounds, needs, and families. My goal is to find books that engage all types learners in reading- boys and girls I like to provide books that allow students to experience adventure and get 'hooked on reading'. Learning is fun, and it never stops when we are able to go beyond our own experiences.

My Project

In order for this book club experience to work, each student in 5th and 8th grade will be given the same book so that students can have their own copy to read from. The 5th grade teachers would like to spend some time reading aloud and modeling their thinking when reading, while the 5th grade students follow along. The books will be used by 8th grade students during their silent reading time.

All students will be reading the same chapters at the same time in order for the 8th graders to facilitate group discussions, zoom meetings, fun activities, and ultimately culminating in the author visiting our school.

The books are an integral part of this project in that many of our student see different specialists (ELL, RTI, SPED) and the specialists will be able to assist our students with reading and understanding. In the event that the students need to learn from home, all students will have their own copy to continue reading.

We would also like to offer raffle prizes of other books by this author. When the author visits we would like the students to have an opportunity to meet and talk with him. The author would sign these other books and students would enter an essay contest for a chance to win lunch and a set of books.
