Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My class of 25 has very few students that have ever traveled outside of the state - and many never outside of our small city.

Because of my kids' lack of background knowledge of the geography and cultures of other states, it is especially important to introduce them to the states while encouraging interest and involvement. As they begin their research of the states I need something to "hook em" and help them take ownership of their state.

They love the Discover America series. In fact last year's class wrote countless letters to over 100 service organizations asking for donations of these books. We ended up with two - Georgia and Nevada. The Discover America State by State series uses beautiful artwork, read-aloud rhymes and appealing expository text to spotlight the history, landmarks, events and people that make each state unique. These books will make the dry encyclopedia information that they will later research really hold meaning for them. Your donation will ensure that my kids have some knowledge and appreciation for the Eastern United States. With your help hopefully I'll never again hear one of my students respond to a question about this region with, "I don't know. They're all small, squished together, and the same."
