My students have big hearts and ambitions coupled with small wallets and exposure. I teach Geometry, Algebra II, and Trigonometry/PreCalculus to high school students in a high-poverty public school.
There are 5 students who will be the first 5 students to take AP Calculus next year. I am preparing them in my Trigonometry/PreCalculus class. Despite their enthusiasm, creativity, and inspired work ethic, we have a hard time doing work outside of class because none of them can afford a graphing calculator-- they simply cannot explore complex functions without a graphing calculator. No amount of enthusiasm will help us out! As a result, they cannot properly study or do homework outside of class because they do not have access to graphing utilities.
Giving these 5 students each a graphing calculator will help their preparations this year and next year. It will also serve as an incentive for them to stay through the courses to the AP Exam. Also, Having the graphing calculators will allow them to take more complicated math in college, helping them grow into the engineers and mathematicians they could be.
Your help could give these brilliant but poor students access to higher level math and greater achievement on the AP Calculus Exam. This simple gift-- just 5 calculators-- will make a world of difference in their morale and dedication to math.
