My Students

"Cue music... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... action": these words excite my broadcast students each day. We produce the daily broadcast for our high school and also work on short film projects. But we are no ordinary class -- our class includes general education and special needs students of all ability ranges.

My students receive free/reduced lunch and are a mix of general education and special needs students.

Many of my students are visually impaired and severe and profound autistic. They are in a unique class that creates and broadcasts the announcements to the entire school and also tries to include students with special abilities in all of the activities. We are a truly inclusive class that believes each student has a special gift to contribute to each day of class! We run technical equipment each day and have figured out ways for our visually impaired students to partner with others to use even the most complicated equipment. Our autistic students create the weather forecast and show the school that they are proud of what they have accomplished by being weather reporters, musicians, and anchors.

My Project

My students will take a trip to the Museum of Broadcast Communication in order to learn the history of broadcast journalism so that they can apply what they have learned to their coursework. Learning the history of inclusiveness in the field is also important as we include students of all abilities in the classroom. Our class would also like to start a radio station with the visually impaired students in mind so we want to do more research in the field, which we can begin to do in the museum.

The field trip experience itself will change the lives of my students as my general education students will help lead the visually impaired students and the autistic students around the museum and to and from the train.

The trip experience will help them learn inclusiveness, cooperation, and appreciation for the gifts that each other have. We will also be able to apply our new knowledge of the history of broadcast to classroom activities.
