4th Graders Say “California, Here We Come!”

Help me give my students a look at the vast history of California. My 64 fourth graders need wall maps, books, and puzzles to discover everything from the Gold Rush to the glamour of Hollywood.

My Project

I teach 2 rotations of 4th grade Social Studies. That’s 32 students at a time, learning all about the varied history of California. We cover everything from the regions of California, the Spanish explorers & their missions, the Native Americans and their “Trail of Tears.” We learn about the Pony Express and the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. We learn about the roles women played during that construction and the poor treatment of the migrant workers who made the whole thing possible. And best of all… we learn about the California Gold Rush and all of the excitement (and disappointment) that came with it. We learn about Sutter’s Mill and its surrounding areas. We learn about the “boomtowns” that disappeared just as quickly as they were set up. We even learn about Levi Strauss and his dependable fashion idea! We learn about the routes the 49ers took to get to the goldfields- which is exactly why I’d love the large wall maps! In addition to learning all things California, my students are also required to learn the name, spelling, and location of all 50 states- hence, all the puzzles!
