Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 of the most amazing 4th graders who are a perfect mixture of general education and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

Unfortunately, many of our students are below grade level by more than one grade level.

This is because have to be grown ups after school, not kids. They have to take care of little brothers and sisters while their parents work multiple jobs. They don't have the time to study. I don't like to make excuses, but literally, life is in their way.

My students need to know that the only way to get better at anything that is difficult is to practice, not give up. Hopefully they will take these ideas in this Daily Math Fluency Kit and run with them.

My Project

Working in the inner city, students come to my classroom already behind their non-inner city counterparts. Students have a hard time working with math numbers and facts fluently. Where students used to drill and kill to learn their math facts, students struggle to memorize these facts so they can think about math instead of doing computations before they can think.

Students need to be more fluent in their math thinking so that solving hard problems is more about the process, and less about the computation.

If you are so busy trying to figure out the basics, you can't stop and think about the hard concepts.

My kids need to be more fluent in math, and this daily math fluency kit will help them stop thinking about the numbers and help them to think about skills, strategies, and concepts. I know it sounds basic, but you can't read before you know words. You can't do math before you understand numbers.
