Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a new 4th grade teacher at John Mack Elementary School in South Central Los Angeles. 100% of the students at John Mack qualify for free/reduced price breakfast and lunch at the school which is a standard measure to indicate that the students at John Mack live at or below the poverty line.The curriculum that we use for Language Arts currently includes single chapters from longer novels for children. My students are often frustrated that they only get a glimpse at these books (Charlotte's Web for example) instead of getting the opportunity to read longer novels. We do not have any classroom sets of novels to provide my students with more sustained reading experiences.In order to supplement our Language Arts curriculum, I would like to acquire class sets of novels that relate to and supplement the themes of our curriculum. For our unit on "Mystery to Medicine," I would love for our class to have a full set of Roald Dahl's story "George's Marvelous Medicine" in order to give my students with more experience reading novels that directly relate to the themes of our curriculum.My students really need this opportunity to supplement their language arts curriculum because they have so few opportunities to read longer stories that pique their interest. Our entire language arts curriculum is heavily scripted and affords little opportunity for free discussion. By supplementing the curriculum with longer novels like "George's Marvelous Medicine" my students will be able to make huge strides with their reading comprehension and discussion skills.
