My Project
For a year-end culminating project to our Utah History & Geography studies this year, the 4th grade classes will be participating in an afternoon of a Mountain Man Rendezvous coordinated and directed by teachers, parents, and our school PTA. Our aim is to give students a hint of what a real intermountain west rendezvous could have been like where fur trappers and those of many other cultures gathered together to trade goods, skills, services, and experience food and games.
Students will participate in various stations such as weaving on small looms, making butter and Dutch oven biscuits, axe throwing (safe Velcro target and plastic axes style), dancing the Virginia reel, soap carving, pottery making, string games, listening to Native American tales and more.
Students in advance of the rendezvous will also make and decorate their own "parfleche" (not leather but canvas) bags for carrying their supplies on that day. Various activities before and during the rendezvous will earn them "beaver pelts" which they will be allowed to trade at a trading post later, either on that day or the next day.
