Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a wonderful group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. The children I teach have the same drive to learn as students in more affluent neighborhoods.
I have been teaching in this same neighborhood for twelve years and for the past ten years, I have seen parents struggle to buy basic supplies for their children.
They often have to choose whether to buy school supplies or food. Needless to say, the parents chose to buy food. A lack of supplies can really hurt a student's self-esteem, which then affects their learning.
My Project
Throughout my years as a teacher, I have tried to infuse STEM as much as I can. For example, when my students were learning about earthquakes, I had them build an earthquake-proof building. As I walked around the room, I heard my students discussing plate tectonics and base isolators. It was a sight to behold!
I have seen my students grow through hands-on exploration.
They are able to retain information and have discussions about what they have learned. This simple and mechanical machine LEGO set will help my students identify different types of machines and explain how they are useful and they will learn it while having fun at the same time.
