4th Grade Engineers Design With Gizmos and Gadgets!
Help me give my students construction materials like invention and engineering kits and LEGOS bricks to meet the demands of the technology and engineering component of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in a highly urban area of Los Angeles. More than 85 percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school every day ready to learn and appreciate the resources we are able to provide, but those resources that the school can supply are fewer and fewer each year as the budget shrinks.
My class of curious fourth graders is packed with motivated learners who want to know more about the world around them.
They like to ask questions and love getting detailed answers as they explore their environment. Finding the materials to use for hands-on exploration, however, can be a challenge.
My Project
Today's science standards engage students in creating solutions to science questions. Engineering projects in the elementary grades necessitate a large variety of materials for students to choose from when creating and inventing and testing.
These open-ended materials are the perfect building blocks for hands-on, engaging STEM lessons in my classroom.
I recently attended a STEM workshop with an emphasis on engineering lessons and projects that are perfect for my fourth grade students. But the lessons require building and construction materials which I don't have.
I've selected invention and engineering kits from Lakeshore Learning that provide open-ended exploration and are the type of materials I need to make these lessons come alive. A set of LEGO bricks will add to the creative building opportunities, and powerful magnets will be a component of a magnetism exploration unit. All these materials will make the science and engineering lessons a reality for my students.
Your donations will provide the materials necessary for developing these hands-on activities. Thank you for considering this. It will help my students and me a great deal!
