Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 26 amazing 4th grade students in my class who come to school eager to learn and challenge their thinking every day. Our school consists of children from a variety of different countries and cultures. I have students from India, Mexico, Vietnam, Ethiopia, El Salvador and Honduras. Many of our students and parents are newcomers to America and are eager to learn English. My students end up being teachers for their parents and are often translating and teaching them what they are learning at school. Our students are happy and working hard to embrace their new culture as well as maintain their own identities and cultures. Our school consists of 80% of our students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. However, we want to show them that poverty is not a deterrent to their learning capabilities.
My Project
One of the most challenging strategies or skills to teach students is to EDIT their writing. I have found the solution and you can help. The 4 color pen works miracles. Students will be able to sue the pen to focus on a particular writing skill. For example, the BLACK pen will be used to correct indents on new paragraphs. The RED pen will be used to focus and correct capitalization errors. The GREEN pen will be used to fix grammar and punctuation mistakes. The BLUE pen will focus on correcting run on sentences and transition words. The 4 color pen takes away the anxiety of editing their paper and allows students to focus on one skill at a time. Ultimately, this has helped students enjoy finding mistakes and learn how to edit their own work.
