My students need books to read about rocks, minerals, and soil, as well as specimens to examine as they learn about what makes up the world around them.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you were able to read about the world around us? My students need grade level appropriate texts on rocks, minerals, and soil to help them understand the world around them.
My students are third graders at a high poverty school in Arizona.
The state of Arizona doesn't give schools much funding, and our budgets are always being cut. Despite this fact, the students and teachers at this school do what they can to support each other so that the students have a chance to succeed. While this community does not have much, I have watched as the school and students pulled together to organize food and blanket drives to help the homeless, sponsored each other with the Christmas Angel project, and continuously looked out for one another.
My Project
My students will use these books and rock specimens to help them learn about the world around them. They will find out more about the rocks, minerals, and soil that make up the planet we live on. Reading about what makes up our planet will help to feed their scientific curiosity. These supplies will help the students to think logically and evaluate the world about them using the mind of a scientist.
This project is important to my students, so they can have hands-on reading materials and activities to help support their learning of the world around us.
It will also help them to become better readers by having them read texts that aren't solely fictional but factual and scientific in nature.
