My Project
This past school year, I challenged the 2nd grade students to meet their addition and subtraction fluency goals by rewarding them when they hit 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% proficiency on their facts. Our school has a program called fluency flight which requires the kids to complete addition and subtraction activities to help them become proficient. Once they complete the activities, each day they make their "dragon glow." By the end of the week they need to have 4 of their dragons glowing. The program called "fluency flight" keeps track of their proficiency and we check it weekly and rewarded the student with different "dragon" rewards. This motivated the students beyond belief!
The 2nd graders made the most growth and had the highest performance, based on national norms, on their standardized testing this year.
I believe reinforcing their skills and setting up a reward system had a lot to do with their success. I would like to see this continue in 3rd grade where they will start to learn multiplication and division on fluency flight. The dragon rewards will keep the students motivated to keep working to their potential. Thank you!
