My Students

I believe every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, and I am proud to partner with my school, other educators, families, and community leaders to strive toward this goal. I teach in a high poverty school zone in which 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. These amazing students need additional support because most of them come from low-income single family households of which many have little to no support or resources. Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life, and eager to learn.

As the 2016 and 2019 Teacher of the Year as well as an alumni of Metro Atlanta Teach for America, I choose to continue to significantly impact the life trajectories of students in our region’s high-need communities.

My Project

Jennifer Seravallo's Go-To Books for Third Grade are carefully selected mentor texts that engage students in Readers’ Workshop. These books will be used to implement Lucy Calkin’s workshop to create powerful readers.

There are several different genres included to expose students to the various types of reading they will encounter in third grade and beyond.

I use The Reading Strategies Book written by Jennifer Seravallo, to teach key reading strategies. The texts included in the Go-To Books will lend themselves nicely to the strategies students will be learning and practicing to become exceptional readers! They will provide countless opportunities for both whole and small groups strategy lessons in reading.
