3Doodling to Create and Understand

My students need a 3D Printing Pen and set of Plastic "Ink" to be introduced to 3D printing to pilot the item before looking to order a class set.

My Students

I teach 5th and 6th graders in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) course in which students "major," that is in addition to their curricular science class. I want my students to remain in our STEM programs and go forward having a strong foundation in what STEM Ed is about.

My students are artistic scientists who are genuinely curious and excited about the would around them.

My students like hands-on, applicable tasks that enlighten their worlds and satisfy their curiosities. They want to experience, learn, and create. My school provides an incredible environment for satisfying such desires, but as the Philadelphia School District sadly faces severe budget cuts, they have had to close the purse strings tighter this year, as a result. Teachers are now more or less on their own to engage their students if "extra" materials are desired. This is difficult enough for any science teacher, but even more so as a STEM educator, trying to bring several (expensive) fields to life for her very young students to experience.

My Project

I am planning an exciting unit that explores the Anatomy of Art. As a part of this unit, to introduce invertebrates, students will have to capture, euthanize, and mount an insect. After mounting and labeling, students will have to sketch an anatomical diagram of their insect. I would love to incorporate the use of a 3D printer to generate the image of their mounted insect. I think the 3D pen is a wonderful introduction to the capabilities of 3D printing, while giving students control of what they are drawing and creating. The drawn image, or 3D model drawn by the pen, will allow students to identify and label dorsal and ventral anatomy without disrupting their mounted sample.

Support of this project will allow my students to experience an example of the incredible technology that is being developed, and allow them to apply the technology to a field in which they are already comfortable.

Support will allow me to pilot this piece of technology and will hopefully lead to the requesting of aid in funding the entire class pack of 3Doodlers in order to create more incredible experiences for my STEM students.
