My Project
We are a school community that is fully committed to project-based learning. 100% of our curriculum is designed to empower students to design and actively implement solutions to the most pressing issues facing our local and global community, from climate change to health injustice.
A 3D printer creates opportunities for students to actively learn and build a better reality by designing and testing solutions to these critical issues.
For instance, our students are currently in the process of learning about health and food injustice in our community. I would like for our students to be able to design and build a hydroponic system from scratch. This would not only allow students to learn how to 3D model, but would also allow them to begin growing nutritious food to share with our school community.
One of our most popular projects involves students designing and building a fully functional wind turbine prototype to model how best to mitigate our rapidly changing climate. In order for students to make their wind turbines, they need 3D printing software and 3D printers to design, print, and construct critical components, such as their blades and nacelles. While we used 2 fully functional 3D printers over the past 3 years, they have both gone out of commission. After many attempts to repair them, including having student leaders research solutions, we have been unsuccessful.
We would greatly appreciate a new and functional 3D printer, and filament, to continue these projects, and to continue supporting dynamic student-centered learning and student-led design.
