Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had the satisfaction of seeing something from your computer screen in physical form? If you said no, you are like my students, for now. Please, help us bring the excitement of the Maker Movement to South LA!
My students are from South LA and they are about 90% Hispanic and 10% African American.
Almost all of the students qualify for free lunch. We are a charter school with very high expectations and we create a culture that produces college-bound citizens. Our art program is brand new and we are interested in integrating technology as much as possible. 3D printing fits well with our plans and I've already had students ask if we can work on printing.
My Project
My students will be learning 3D modeling this year and if we get a 3D printer and filament, they will be able to see their model in real life. We will focus on simple designs to start, like badges or trophies, and then work our way to more complicated devices like jewelry or machines. They will be learning new methods of manufacturing and they will gain relevant experience that can help them get a job later.
Having a printer in our room will motivate students to complete their work on time and it will allow them to show their friends and family how talented they are.
They are very interested in street art, and there are many installations that have been 3D printed in public spaces. A 3D printer would improve our school culture and help make makers!
