My students need new 3D printers to enhance a school-wide STEM program involving real-world applications of mathematics. Using the 3D printers, students will design and print objects to model/scale buildings in and around our school campus.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are prospective scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. The STEM project that I am posting will benefit all of my students, plus the 3D printing club on our campus. We are a high-poverty school district located in Palm Springs, California. Our school has a high population of students on Free-and-Reduced Lunch, English Learners, and GATE students. These students cannot afford hands-on technology like these 3D printers will provide.
The printers will reach our diverse student population and help grow and foster interest in STEM careers.
My Project
Students will use the bank of 4 3D printers to design and print architectural models fit to scale certain buildings, monuments, and landmarks in the local Palm Springs area. Students will use trigonometry to verify the measurements. This semester-long project will help students engage in the real world application of mathematics and architectural design.
Additionally, a separate 3D printing club is being implemented on our high school campus.
Students (25+ already signed up) in this club will design and print objects using iMac computers in our library to help represent our school. These include school logos, variations of our mascot, and other accessories. The 3D printing club will take requests from other clubs and sports teams to produce objects to help fundraise their respective programs. Our plan is to partner with our business academy, entitled Money, Marketing, and Management (MMM) to handle the business end of the fundraisers. Together, we are building a collaborative team of students and teachers that can benefit from these printers.
