3D Printing for Robotics Team and Computer Science Classes

My Project

Our Robotics Team is going into its second year, and the team spent the past 2 meetings discussing "Glows and Grows". One Grow we found worth addressing was the accessibility of materials needed on a short turnaround as we compete once a month in competitions. Instead of having to order materials and pieces every time we need, we discovered that many other teams were 3D printing important pieces when possible. Currently, the school has 6 3D printers that are not easy to access after school, when the team meets.

The donation of 3D printers to our school will be used by our Robotics Team to supplement the current stock of 3D printers in the school, providing our Robotics Team the flexibility to print what we need, while also giving my Computer Science students the ability to partake in Design Thinking.

The Robotics team will be the primary benefactor, but I intend to update the curriculum I use in my beginner Computer Science courses to incorporate Kinesthetic Problem-Solving instead of paper-and-pen Problem-Solving.

These 3D printers will therefore serve double duty; allowing the Robotics team to print, and allowing some of the better creations made by the Computer Science classes to "come to life", as students can then take their designs with them when they finish, a component that is typically missing in traditional Computer Science courses.
