My students are K-3 students in a Title I school. Nineteen percent of our School is on free or reduced lunch. The students in second and third grades voluntarily choose to come to our makerspace (aka “the STEAM Room”) during lunch and recess times once a week to work on using the Design Process. Additionally, home rooms full of students use the space throughout the week for STEAM projects aligned to state, Common Core and NGSS standards.
No other elementary school in our district boasts a makerspace or this unique opportunity!
My Project
Although all students, K-3, will have an opportunity to access the 3D Printer and 3D printing filament, students in third grade will have the experience of using the complete Design Process to create an item on the 3D printer. Students will then engage in the voting process to determine which items should continue to be printed and will be immersed in social studies standards in economics to market and sell these items. Once this project is complete, students will have the chance to go through the process again to ensure retention of skills and exciting experiences.
Again, no other elementary school in the district is able to provide this experience which makes our Title I school unique in our district in Northeast Ohio.
