3D Printing Comes to Kindergarten

My students need a Makerbot 3D printer to print their collaborative TinkerCAD design with the guidance of our 4th and 5th grade High Ability students.

My Students

Technology has become part of our every day lives. In order for my students to succeed in the future, they need as much exposure to new advances in technology as possible. A Makerbot 3D printer would provide an eye opening experience into the world of technology for them.

My students are 5 and 6 years old kindergarten students who attend a rural Title I school in a tight knit community.

Each student becomes fully engaged in learning when sharing our four laptops and two iPads. They are naturally drawn to technology. I try to incorporate as much technology as I can into each learning day.

My Project

The Makerbot 3D printer and the TinkerCAD software would be used by collaborating with our 4/5 High Ability students in creating 3D objects that depict characters from our reading and writing curriculum. Each of my kindergarten students will be paired with a High Ability Student to help in the design process using the TinkerCAD software. This project will encourage a collaborative spirit across the grade levels in our school.

This project will help bring new technology to our classroom that will excite my students by what can be designed by using a 3D printer.

It also offers a way to create an upper grade mentor by collaborating with our 4/5 High Ability students.
