This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently work as a blended 5th-grade teacher in the South Bronx, NY. Our students have a lot of potentials that need to be nurtured. Most of my students live locally within walking distance, and some travel by school bus, city bus to our school. They live in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. Some of them live with grandparents or other family members and some live in shelters, nearly all of them come from low‑income households and get free lunch.
They are growing up in a tough neighborhood, one of the poorest in the United States, and often faced difficulties at such an early age.
Our mission is to create a safe, welcoming, and warm environment in the classroom so they could know how special they are.
We always start our day with positive affirmations hoping that they carry these words with them in their life to help them remember their worth.
My Project
I am very excited about the IF/THEN Innovative Challenge! My project is centered around community services. During the pandemic, we have learned that regardless of keeping social distance, we are better when we work together. Part of keeping ourselves and our community safe, it's being able to have the needed gears. With this in mind, I got inspired by a winning project "3D printer needed for community service project" and decided to create a similar project to continue to help our community.
3D printers will help us make plastic face shields and mask brackets to give to the countless individuals sleeping on the sidewalk near the school.
Many of them are on the street without masks, I have wondered if they have the gear (like masks) to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Our project would couple technology and math to create the PPE face shields and mask brackets. We can design a prototype, print it, and deliver the shield to a homeless shelter in a day, without the long development process other technologies require. 3d printers may be able to make the parts for 10 face shields in 24 hours.
It is important that our students understand the value of giving to others. This will be an excellent project.
IF the students at our school had 3D printers THEN the community would have the necessary PPE gear to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. I will use the IF/THEN collection in my lesson plans to showcase women and girls who are forerunners and leaders in their community. Two of the videos that I will be using with my students from the IF/THEN collections are Mission Unstoppable: Teen 3D Prints Prosthetic Limb for Veteran and Mission Unstoppable: If/ Then 3D Statue Exhibit.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
