My Project
To prepare our students for careers in esports, game design, and programming, we propose acquiring a 3D printer to integrate hands-on design experience into our curriculum. This project will allow students to conceptualize, design, and create tangible models of game assets, such as characters, props, and environments. By bringing their digital designs to life, students will gain a deeper understanding of 3D modeling software, prototyping, and iterative design—critical skills in game development and esports industries. The 3D printer will serve as a bridge between theoretical learning and practical application, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.
The project will focus on teaching students the pipeline for creating 3D assets used in video games.
Using professional-grade software such as Blender or Unity, students will design their models, which they can then print and use as reference points for digital integration. Through this process, students will learn essential industry concepts like polygon modeling, texture mapping, and scalability. Additionally, the tactile feedback from handling their printed designs will help students understand the spatial reasoning needed for creating realistic game environments and characters. This hands-on approach aligns with best practices for experiential learning and engages students in STEM fields while fostering an appreciation for the artistry behind game design.
The inclusion of 3D printing in our esports and game development curriculum will also empower students to create personalized gaming peripherals, like ergonomic controller modifications or custom keycaps, enhancing their understanding of user experience design. These projects will not only reinforce technical skills but also allow students to explore entrepreneurial opportunities by marketing their designs. With a 3D printer, our students will be better equipped to succeed in rapidly evolving industries, connecting their passions with real-world applications while developing future-ready skills.
