My Project

All of our students want to play with clay! Even students who have an otherwise hard time focusing, have no problem getting engrossed in clay. However, my school doesn't have a kiln to use clay that needs to get fired. This model magic project would be such a special treat for them! Model Magic is a very soft, pliable, easy-to-build-with 3D material. It air hardens and is able to be painted once it's dry. Students can manipulate it easily, but need to use their fine motor skills to add and subtract the clay to make their designs.

This project starts with a discussion about dragons from different cultures all over the globe and the mythology and beliefs that surround them.

We will also look at dragon artwork that has been illustrated, painted and sculpted. Students always love talking about dragons! There is so much dragon lore in books, movies and video and card games. Students love sharing, and learning, about them. The first step in making their dragon eye will be to sketch out the design and colors they want to create with. Every student will choose one dragon eye cabochon and use the model magic to build the dragon eye around the cabochon. Once their piece is dry, they will paint it using watercolor paints, then glue a magnet onto the back.

I teach from a cart and travel from classroom to classroom. It's very limiting when it comes to offering the students fun 3D art materials to use. The model magic is a perfect compromise! It is light, compact, it doesn't make the mess that clay or paper-mache would make in their classroom, and doesn't require any specific tools other than their fingers. I know they will absolutely love this project.
