Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with some of the most resilient, creative, funny and smart young people I've known.
My urban, English learning, mostly low income students face many challenges but surprise me every day with their commitment to improving themselves and their community.
We live in a gang impacted community who is also facing displacement by gentrification and rising rents. 80% of our student body qualifies for free or reduced rate lunch and over 90% of them qualify to enter a four year college when they are done with their time here.
My Project
My students went crazy with our new 3D printer. We want to use the pens to add to the designs from the bigger machine. We plan to create jewelry and wearable art and we plan to study entrepreneurship. In our tech and design savvy world, many of our urban students are lagging behind. These materials will help them get excited about technology in art and design.
We will create a fun competition.
And the winners will get to display their art in the community and sell the work so we can give the money back to the art room to buy more filament.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
