This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My photography students hail from every corner of Los Angeles! They are ethnically diverse, predominantly low income, and all have a passion for the visual arts.

Over the course of 4 years at our public arts-based high school in downtown Los Angeles, students can take as many as 12 art classes at no cost and are trained in a conservatory model that prepares them for art school and college.

Our school has a dual mission that emphasizes rigorous academics and the arts. Seventy percent of our students are low income and qualify for a free or reduced fee lunch.

In my classroom students study Digital Imaging, Photography 1, Photography 2, and AP 2D Design (with an emphasis in Photography). We organize art exhibitions all year as part of the educational program and our students win more Scholastic Art Awards than any school in the Western United States.

My Project

In my classroom, students are taught traditional 35mm photography techniques and have access to darkroom facilities year round. Starting with the creation of pinhole cameras and progressing to more advanced projects that apply the elements of art and principles of design, students become familiar with the components of a manual camera, learn how to operate an enlarger and perfect crop & burn and other developing techniques.

The scanner being asked for in this DonorsChoose project will give students the ability to take their darkroom photography skill set to the next level and allow them to digitize, Photoshop, and print their 35mm film for exhibitions, competitions (Scholastics, Young Arts, Sony World Photography Awards, etc) and their AP 2D Design portfolios.

This scanner will be instrumental in bridging traditional photography techniques with modern digital platforms. Please help support the photography program at Grand Arts!
