Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard-working, second-language learners who come from families where Spanish is the primary language. They are taught in a bilingual setting so they can then transfer the academic skills and strategies to learning English Language Arts.
As research has shown, being bilingual is an asset to students, and these students work very hard to make sure they keep their native language while succeeding in English, also.
Students not only learn Spanish language arts, but also English language development, and English language arts.
They are curious, inquisitive, and smart. However, many come from families where their parents did not get a high school education, or even speak English, which makes their progress in our educational system harder than for those who come from more privileged backgrounds.
My Project
Engineering is one of the ways in which I have been able to not only capture students' interest in science and problem solving, but also math, writing, and computing. Thus, having a 3-D printer in the classroom seems like the next logical step in our journey into becoming 21st century learners.
Many of my students come from families where they are the first generation to learn English, and the first to be educated in this country.
They come to school with many talents and gifts, but few economic resources. Providing them with access to technology is one of the things which I strive to do in order to expose them to skills they will need to succeed in their future.
