My Students
Having a 3D printer in our school will help our students understand how they can conceptualize an object and take it through the digital manufacturing process. This project-based activity will center on creativity and technology, and will have a significant impact on our students’ learning.
Our elementary is a K-5 school that serves approximately 500 students in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Our school community understands how important it is to expose our students to STEM technologies at this impressionable age. We want to take this STEM learning a step further by purchasing a 3D printer for our school's Technology Club. This project will give our students a first-hand understanding of how objects can be imagined, designed, and manufactured using digital tools.
My Project
My students need a Dremel Idea Builder 3D printer and four rolls of filament so they can develop their technology and creative design skills. The 3D printer will be used by our Technology Club to learn how the printer and software operate, and discover the capabilities of this amazing technology.
As the coach of the Technology Club, I am conversant with Autodesk’s TinkerCAD software, which I will use to show our students how they can design and model objects. I have also explored 3D printing websites, such as Makerbot and MakeXYZ, which provide lessons and resources for deploying 3D printers in schools. Furthermore, Autodesk has an office here in Manchester, and their education team will be an excellent resource for support and guidance for this project.
3D printing provides students with numerous project-based learning opportunities to help them experience the design process first hand.
This printer will allow our students to collaborate and problem solve with their peers, apply their technology and creative skills, learn from their mistakes, and in the end have a tangible object that represents the entire design process. It is this type of amazing instruction and understanding that this 3D printing system will offer.
